New construction of the Feuerstein Arena
Not named after the Flintstones family, but after the local herbal bitter, the Feuerstein Arena, a new multifunctional arena in the Schierke district of the town of Wernigerode in Saxony-Anhalt, has been under construction since May 2016.>
There had been an ice rink on this site since 1911, where a natural ice stadium was later built for the first GDR winter sports championships in 1950.
At the beginning of 2013, a Europe-wide architectural competition was announced for the reactivation and redesign of the listed ice stadium.
The new arena is scheduled to open in December 2017.
“The arena is a central building block in the development of the town and tourism in Schierke. The planned covered artificial ice surface measuring 25 by 56 meters and the cold plate built into the ground should make ice skating possible in the winter months regardless of the weather. The roof is curved like a potato chip, 15 meters high and consists of a fiberglass membrane. The visitor area, on the other hand, remains without a roof. There are also plans to construct two functional buildings on the site, which will be used for skate rental, bistro, toilet and changing rooms, as well as storage and to house the refrigeration technology.
Concerts and other cultural or sporting events are planned for the Feuerstein Arena in the summer months from 2018.”

Delivery and assembly of the foot sections. 27.07.2017
Everything that is to last longer in life needs a good foundation.
Now two huge base sections have been manufactured at the Zeman production facility in Poland (Zeman HDF) for the new Feuerstein Arena in Wernigerode.
The parts are 10.5 m long and 4.2 m wide and had to be delivered to Germany using special transportation.
These were assembled from bent 50mm sheet metal. One particular challenge was to bend and position the thick metal sheets so precisely that the final geometry matched the planning exactly.
The parts, each weighing 41 tons, have now been installed and provide a good basis for further work.
