Renovation of the glass roof of the Bavarian State Parliament

At the end of 2021, Waagner Biro steel and glass won the tender to renovate the glass roof over the plenary chamber of the Bavarian State Parliament in Munich. The construction work will be carried out during ongoing operations. A special false ceiling was therefore installed inside for the duration of the renovation work. To protect the MPs and the Maximilianeum plenary chamber and its suspended glass ceiling. A weather protection roof was erected over the gable roof to be renovated.

Once this preparatory work had been completed, the dismantling of the existing glass roof, including the secondary steel structure, began in June. Since July, the primary steel structure remaining on the building has been newly fire-protected and the new glass roof will then be erected. Completion of the renovated glass roof is planned for the end of 2022.

As all construction work is being carried out while the Landtag is in operation and in coordination with the other construction lots taking place at the same time, the logistics and coordination with all project participants pose a particular challenge in this project.

The usual performance tests (PMU) for airtightness, driving rain tightness and wind loads for a glass roof of this complexity were successfully completed in May 2022 at the PfB Test Center for Building Elements in Stephanskirchen (Germany). In a further series of tests, the residual load-bearing capacity of the panes was also verified using test specimens.

Young engineers from Waagner Biro steel and glass were also involved in all the tests – this is how the steel and glass specialist effectively combines project work and training for young employees.

Technical details

The total thickness of the new triple insulating glass package is 69 mm, with a standard pane size of 1.4 x 4.8 m. Waagner Biro steel and glass has designed a special sealing system for the Maximilianeum.
